According to the latest research, the average person spends 59 hours a week using the Internet. What is even more concerning, there is a cyber-attack once every 39 seconds. As a society, we spend more and more time online without worrying about dangers lurking around every turn.
Take phishing as an example. It is the most common type of cybercrime in which a user is contacted by email by someone posing as an employee of a bank or other institution. The aim is to possessobtain sensitive data such as credit card details or passwords. Unfortunately, most people are careless or unaware of this so they do not to take a moment to check the reliability of the message. The results are usually huge financial loss and identity theft.
One thing to consider is: how can we prevent ourselves? The key is to raise awareness about cybercrimes by organisingorganizing campaigns. The government should release advertisements encouraging regular password change. The elderly, who are most under threat, could participate in IT activities and learn how to use a computer safely.
