Zola traces the life of Moses, from the day he entered the Nile river as a newborn to when he became an amazing magician. She shows how he would have gone through life as a Hebrew, but was lucky enough to live with the Pharaoh because his mom wanted him not to be killed. In the book of Exodus, male newborns arewere killed because Pharaoh iswas scared. Pharaoh was scared that the would-bethere would be too many Israelites and they would take over Egypt. Moses finally opened his eyes and one day seessaw how his people arewere being treated and decidesdecided to kill one of the Egyptians that were keeping watch. You will see in Exodus 2:11, One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor.” He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of ahis people. Moses wasn’t happy with what they were doing to his people so he killed the Egyptians. He didn’t realize people saw him do this, and thatthen Pharaoh found out and went after Moses. Moses and whenwent to where God toldtalked to him, but he also didn’t feel the same. In the book, it says, “He felt as empty as a post hole for he was none of the things he once been.” When Moses leftran away from Egypt running he didn’t feel like he didhad done the right thing, but at some point, he realizesrealized that God hashad something amazing for him. God iswas giving him and his people freedom.
