In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston shows Janie's love language of quality time through her search for love, through quality time. After Janie's arranged marriage with Logan Killicks, she wonders if she would ever truly love him, but “[...] the old folks had said it, so it must be so. Husbands and wives always loved each other, and that was what marriage meant” (Hurston 21). Janie expects to bond with Logan by spending quality time with him and getting to know him as her husband. Logan later begins to neglect Janie and puts her to work behind a mule. This is when Janie meets Joe Starks who“[...] did not represent sun-up and pollen and blooming trees, but he spoke for far horizon. He spoke for change and chance” (Hurston 29). Because Logan was neglecting Janie, she spent her time with Joe instead, who she then began to love. Joe had spoken for change and ended up stealing Janie from Logan and marrying her in secret. After Joe’s death, Janie meets a young, attractive man named Tea Cake,: “Tea Cake fell in beside her and mounted the porch this time. So she offered him a seat, and they made a lot of laughter out of nothing” (Hurston 101). Janie's relationship with Tea Cake begins with him going out of his way to spend time with Janie, as well as taking care of her. Tea Cake and Janie got along exceptionally well because of this. Janie's struggles with her husbands clearly show how her character bonds with people through experiencing quality time.
