Pre-colonial Rwanda was united, yet colonialism changed everything, even if there were positive effects, negative ones were the worst as more outlined in the next paragraph.
Colonialism was risen by our forefathers who welcomed the colonizers with both hands and signed the treaty of Rwanda as a German protectorate by Prince Sharangabo in August 1884. This event was the root cause of colonialism. Later, the colonialist embraced divide and rule policy to dismantle our unity,. This ruined unity was too weak to stop the occurrence of horrific events that triggered bloodshed of Rwandans such as 1959 Rwandan Crisis, 1973 Coup d’ Etats and 1994 Genocide against Tutsi which took millionmillions of lives of Rwandans.
All in all, I strongly believe that treating this root cause will create lasting positive change by removing the mist which was left by colonialism and its effects against our good history.
