Imagery is the one element that has the power to stimulate the imagination and create vivid pictures in the mind. Within the sources, people know that imagery is the visual description orof figurative language. Foreshadowing and mood are both linked hand in hand when it comes to imagery in literary forms. Foreshadowing is the warning or indication of a future event. While, while the mood is the temporary state of mind or feeling. These three common types of literary terms come together to form this short story to bring suspense (foreshadowing) and to allow the reader to visualize what’s happening and how the character(s) is feeling (imagery and mood).
An example of imagery that foreshadows and creates mood in the story is when Nat notices the change in weather. He states, "
He had never known a change so swift and sudden. Black winter had descended in a single night." ( Du Maurier ). Du Maurier uses imagery to show the changing weather pattern from autumn to winter with a confusing but calm mood. "The wind changed overnight"; the farmer predicts that the weather would change and the winter would be hard. The weather changed, which foreshadowed the fact that there willwould be more bizarre things happening later.
The literary terms imagery, foreshadowing, and mood all come united to form the suspense moments and the pictured thoughts of mindful feelings. The author wanted to show changing weather patterns to help the reader understand how she chose the layout of the short story. When the weather changed wickedly and out of nowhere
, it caused a whole flip to the setting. This allowed the readers to have their understanding of what the future in the story might look like, bywith the author's help of literary elements.
