NAFLD Third definition
Non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLDs) are clinicopathological conditions which are basically related to type II diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndromes, obesitiesobesity, cardiovascular diseases, the resistance of insulin, and dyslipidemiasdyslipidemia (Ballestri et al., 2015).
• Middle East
It is widely acknowledged that NAFLD is prevalent across all continents, but the highest prevalence rates are reported in the Middle East (32%), South America (31%), Asia (21%), USA (24%), Europe (23%) and Africa (14%) (Younossi et al., 2016).
In his study, Eshraghian (2017) hypothesized that the changes in lifestyle and dietary habits are the main reasons behind the high prevalence of NAFLD in the Middle East.
Razavi et al. (2018) conducted a comparative study that compared the adult prevalence rates of the disease in KSA and UAE.
NAFLD constitutes one of the three major causes of cirrhosis and liver transplantation, given the possible evolutive course of this disease, and it can also be associated with the occurrence of a hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatocellular carcinoma can occur in non-cirrhotic patients (Yasui et al., 2011).
Cytokines and other inflammatory markers or signaling molecules released by adipocytes contribute to the onset of insulin resistance and a thrombotic state (Cambuli et al., 2008).
