During my engineering studyies, I combined theoretical concepts and calculation andwith hands-on experience to deepern my understanding. For example, after studying about design of concrete structure for almost an entire semester, I casted a beam for real in a group of three. I needed to prepare a model for that beam, and combine it with reinforcement bars made by my teammate. Design of the beam was done in groups, and we shared our ideas, and cross -checked each others work. After finishing the design with my teammates, I cut a plastic board into small pieces and glued them together. In order to make this model leak-proof, the cutting section needed to be as straight and flat as possible, and vertical to nearby surfaces everywhere. Thoise was achieved with extreme carefultion. Control points were set every three inches, and there is no deflection from point to point and the width of the beam is exactly the same at each check point. Glue was also used to seal joints to avoid any inrregularity caused by tapes. The beam was casted in a lab with reinforcement prepared by my teammates. SThe strenghth of the beam was tested after enough curing. It is actually very close to the calculated value.
