For Epicureans, reality is composed entirely composed of empty space filled with atoms, for reality is exclusively matter in motion.1 Therefore, the nature of the universe was merely a creation formed from the random impact of atoms swerving and colliding with one another.2 Therefore, Epicureans argued that the nature of reality is not teleological, for the cosmos is not alive, nor divine, nor profane. Moreover, because everything is matter in motion, sensations and perceptions are to be considered matter in motion.
