Bernie Sanders was born in Brooklyn, NY ion Sep. 14, 1941. His parents were pPolish immigrant from Polands. Adolf Hitler influenced hBernime to get into the politics when he heard and read about the mass murder orf 19 million people by Hitler during the Second World War. Bernie attended James Madison High School atin Brooklyn andwhere he won several basketball championships while there in school. His parents passed away as soon as he graduated from high school. He decided to go college, and enrolled in Brooklyn College for one year, before he transferred to the University of Chicago in 1960. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964, and returned back to his home stateown; Brooklyn, New York. Initially, after returning from college, he worked in the positions such as carpentery and mental health counseloring. Because of his unstable jobs and income, he planned, and decided, to move to Burlington, Vermont in 1968. After moving to Vermont, he worked as a carpenter, songwriter, and movie director.
In 1980, on the recommendation of his colleagues, who was a professor at the University of Vermont, he decided to run athe first political campaign in his life; for the position of city mayor in Burlington, Vermont,. which hHe lost. For the second time, he again ruan a campaign for city mayor, and won. thHe got elected successfully in 1983. He was elected as a city mayor for three consecutive times in 83, 85, and 87. In 1990, he was elected into the US House of Representatives, and served there for almost one and a half decades, before working in the US house of sSenate. Huck Gutman, a professor of English at the University of Vermont, in his article, “Outsider in the house” mentions that Bernie Sanders is the only independent/socialist candidate to serve in the US hHouse of rRepresentatives for tsuche a long time (Gutman) .
Bernie Sanders announced that he was running for president in May, 2015, and his main message was to restore progressive ideals. He campaigned for 15 months, making progressive ideas as his main message. He visited about 46 states duriong his campaign trail. Many people take sSanders' campaign seriously because of his consistent message, throughout his life. A British historian, and a professor of international History at Cambridge University, in his article, “ Democracy unbound,” said that Bernie Sanders has quite a long history of supporting the progressive movement directly (Reynolds, 1997).
During his campaign he went to WMadisconsin, MadWisconsin to deliver a speech on his progressive ideas such as income inequality, education, climate change, and health care reforms. The New York Times published an article about sSanders' campaign atin Madison, Wisconsin, and was mentioned that sSanders deliversed a speech on his progressive ideas. and aAround 12,000 people attended his rally.
