This research study is to explore the reasons of the patientfor patients' cancellation forof their appointment inappointments for the Cardiac Catheterization lab (Cath lab) procedure at a recently opened hospital in the United Arab Emirates. The definition of cancellation varies from one hospital to another. In the researcher’s organization, it is defined as one that was not performed after the schedule is finalized at 12.30pm the day before procedure.
A review of literature is essential to any research as it facilitates the creation of a strong underpinning for advancing knowledge, and helps to develop thereviewing previous research and developing a theory (Leininger & McFarland , 2006). The aim or the purpose of the literature review is to find other research in this area, is itas this is a problem both internationally and locally, to inform each step of the research process of the main cancellation rate in other regions and the reason contributed to the postponement or cancellation of case.
This chapter reviews the literature pertaining to reasons of patientpatients cancelling their appointmentappointments. Of the studies, almost 50% addressed the cancellation reasons on the day and factors affecting the cancellation, yet they were not conducted in the setting of cardiac department or Cath lab. Moreover, the study conducted by Morris et al. (2017) in the research setting recommending to scrutinizerecommended scrutinizing the reasons of patient no showfor patients' no-show on the scheduled day. Hence, this research which exploreresearch exploring the reasons of patientfor patients cancelling their appointment for Cath lab procedure patient was chosen to identify the issues and reasons offor cancellation and how to improve the scheduling process.
This study aimed to highlight the reasons of patient cancelling their procedure appointment for the Cardiac Catheterization lab in the Middle eastEast hospital. Many studies explain the patient no-show and cancellation of their appointmentappointments as one of the challenging problems in the health care sector, which limitlimits the access of other patientpatients to thea procedure, causes financial issues and also it affects the operational flow of the hospital.
