Th
rough a reading of Édouard Glissant’s Les Indes, this article argues that Édouard Glissant, in his 19556 anti-colonial poem Les Indes, presents a re-envisioning of the epic genre. Adopting the genre of the most fundamental texts of Western literature, the Homeric epics, Glissant destabilises the genre through postmodern strategies of polyphony and metaliterary disruptions of the narrative, exposing and disenchanting the Western self-mythologies inherent in the genre, while at the same time creating a new poetic vision of Caribbean collective identity. In the article, I also examine the constructions of the colonised land as a woman – and rape as a metaphor for colonisation – through the notion of ”porno-tropics”, coined by Anne McClintock. I argue that Glissant reproduces colonial and essentialist conceptions about both gender and the native people in Les Indes, while at the same time celebrating the shifting, hybrid identity, anticipating the philosophy of Relation that he would develop in his later writings.
