a) The purpose of the first stanza is to contrast the scenery of England with Australia. The author personifies England with imagery “your veins”, where the red imagery symbolises roses, the native England emblem. England also has lush forest and green lanes. Australia is completely different, “sunburnt” and “droughts,” tells us that Australia is very barren. Although England has a beautiful scenery, she prefers Australia; “my love is otherwise; I love a sunburnt country” which uses possessive pronouns to convey the idea of ownership and connection.

b) The
poetpoets sense of pride and admiration is in the first line of the fourth and fifth stanza, “Core of my heart” uses repetition to convey the audience her love for her country, Australia. In the fourth and fifth stanza, “my country” uses a possessive pronoun to emphasise that Australia belongs to the poet. In the last stanza, “my homing thoughts will fly” uses an instinctive metaphor to show that the poet’s thoughts are like a homing pigeon. In the fourth stanza, “the drumming of an army” uses auditoryan auditory metaphor to create a powerful scene. “Army” is majestic suggesting Australia is majestic. In the second paragraph, “I love her jewel-sea” uses sparkling imagery to illustrate a rare sight. that Australia possesses exquisite quality. Those are the techniques the author used to show her pride for Australia.
