Williams lived in New York for asome time and she made her first paintings of nature there. These paintings were not realistic, they were filled with flat patterns and bold colors. Williams began spending yourher summers in New Mexico in 1929. MovedShe moved there permanently in 1949. She refined her lush, highly abstract style in New Mexico, and it was there that she painted her most memorable works. Her landscapes often present unusual perspectives which make the viewer feel suspended in air. Other paintings focus closely on a single image, such as flowerflowers or the weather-beaten skulskull of an animal.
