Irish novelist James Joyce and Norwegian play writerplaywright Henrik Ibsen are known for their short stories “Eveline” and A Doll’s House which was introduced to us in class a couple weeks ago. Henrik Ibsen received a very beautiful letter from young Joyce on his 70th birthday. In the letter, Joyce expressed how much he loved Ibsen’s work and wished to be just like him someday. Unfortunately, he never met Henrik Ibsen but was very fascinated by his plays and stories. Henrik Ibsen premiered his play A Doll’s House in December 1879. These two writers have something in common which is the use of symbols in their stories and plays. In both stories A Doll’s House and “Eveline”, we see some similarities in which both writers feature strong women as the central characters that are going through some changes in life. Ibsen and Joyce doesdo a beautiful job in how they use theirusing symbols to make the women in each story stand up for themselves in the toughest situations. The use of symbols in both stories is mesmerizing and catches the attention of their readers as they use symbols like dust, window, Christmas tree, etc., to connect with the audience.
